CHENNAI: About six years ago, a middle-aged woman‘s allegation that her husband was responsible for their daughter’s pregnancy shocked the state, especially when she furnished lab reports as “proof”. On Tuesday, she was found guilty of foisting a false case against the man and forging documents, and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by a Pocso court in Chennai.
During these six years, the husband moved Madras HC first for anticipatory bail, and then to quash the case itself.
In view of the sensation the case generated, the HC reviewed the issue seriously and found that the urinary report and doctor’s statements furnished by the woman were false and that she managed to create the certificates at the same scan centre where she had worked as a lab assistant a few years ago.
The court also recorded his daughter’s statement in an in-camera proceeding and confirmed that the woman had falsified the documents to take revenge on her husband at the cost of their daughter. Also the couple were fighting a divorce in a family court.
After calling her bluff, special judge for exclusive trial of cases under Pocso Act M Rajalakshmi pronounced the verdict on Tuesday; apart from jail time, she was also fined Rs 6,000.
