NEW DELHI: After the recent poll debacle in Madhya Pradesh, the Congress on Saturday announced that senior leader and former chief minister Kamal Nath will step down as the state unit chief to make way for Jitendra Patwari.
Patwari, 50, lost to a BJP candidate from the Rau assembly seat with a margin of over 35,000 votes. His selection is being seen as the party’s attempt to make a fresh start in the Hindi heartland state ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha elections next year.
All about the new MP Congress chief:
- Patwari was the cabinet minister for higher education, sports and youth affairs of Madhya Pradesh under the Kamal Nath government after the Congress came to power in the state after 15 years.
- He resigned during the 2020 political turmoil, which saw the BJP-led Shivraj Singh Chouhan regime take over.
- Patwari was born in Bijalpur, a small town near Indore, on November 19, 1973. He completed his schooling from Government Multi Malhar Ashram Higher Secondary School, Indore and then pursued his BA and LLB degrees from Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya Indore.
- His grandfather Kodarlal Patwari was a freedom fighter during the Independence movement.
- His father, Ramesh Chandra Patwari, is also an active leader of the Congress.
- Patwari began his political innings in 2013 as MLA from Rau Vidhan Sabha. He won election for the second time from Rau in 2018 but lost it in 2023.
- He was the president of the Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress.
