Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Gujarat’s Surat district today to inaugurate the newly developed Surat Diamond Bourse.
In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) highlighted that after its inauguration, Surat Diamond Bourse will be the world’s largest and modern centre for the international diamond and jewellery business.
It will be a global centre for trading of both rough and polished diamonds as well as jewellery, the statement added.
It will comprise a state-of-the-art ‘Customs Clearance House’ for import and export, a jewellery mall for the retail jewellery business and a facility for international banking and safe vaults.
On Saturday, PM Modi also shared information about the inauguration ceremony in a post on X and said, “In Surat tomorrow, the Surat Diamond Bourse will be inaugurated. This will be a major boost to the diamonds industry. The ‘Customs Clearance House’, Jewellery Mall and facility of International Banking and Safe Vaults will be significant parts of the Bourse”.
He also shared the photos of Diamond Bourse.
Built at a cost of approximately Rs 3,500 crore, the building spans 67 lakh square feet of floor space and has the capacity to house nearly 4,500 diamond trading offices.
In August this year, the building, which is part of the Diamond Research and Mercantile (DREAM) City, was recognised by the Guinness World Records as the largest office building in the world.
The megastructure, built on a plot of 35.54 acres, has nine ground towers plus 15 floors, with office spaces ranging from 300 sq ft to 1 lakh sq ft. The nine rectangular towers are connected by a central spine. The building has a platinum ranking from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).
Notably, billionaire diamond trader Vallabhbhai Lakhani, the Director of Kiran Gems, has shifted his Rs 17,000-crore business to Diamond Bourse and is also developing a mini-township to house his employees.
After concluding the event, PM Modi will travel to his Lok Sabha constituency, Varanasi, to participate in several events.
