Israel-Hamas war: Joe Biden urges Israel to end high intensity Gaza fighting, 12 Palestinians killed in West Bank

The United States has urged Israel to end the high-intensity fighting in Gaza, as soon as possible. This comes as Israel continues to draw international outrage and rare criticism from the United States over the killing of civilians. Meanwhile, 12 Palestinians were killed following Israeli raids, which the IDF said helped capture dozens of terrorists. In recent years Israel has greatly expanded settlements in the West Bank, leaving less territory for a viable Palestinian state.

In the ongoing war, more than 18,400 Palestinians have been killed, according to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-controlled territory. Israel says 113 of its soldiers have died in its ground offensive after Hamas raided southern Israel on October 7, killing about 1,200 people and taking about 240 hostages.

ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR

  • US President Joe Biden has urged Israel to take more care to protect civilians in Gaza. He also said the United States wants Israel to scale down its offensive against the terror group Hamas. Speaking to reporters following an event at a medical research center near Washington, Biden said, “I want them to be focused on how to save civilian lives — not stop going after Hamas, but be more careful.”

Biden aide Jake Sullivan, the US national security adviser, who visited Israel to meet officials, said he held “intense, detailed conversations” with Israeli officials on transitioning away from high-intensity fighting in Gaza and focusing on more precise battles and targeting top Hamas officials. Sullivan also said that Israel has an “unbelievable burden” of needing to “operate in a way against a foe that is entrenched among the civilian population, using citizens as human shields.”

  • As many as 12 Palestinians were killed as Israeli troops carried out raids and read out Jewish prayers at a mosque in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin. On the attack, the Israel Defense Forces said it helped them capture dozens of terrorists.

The Palestinian government criticised the operation inside Jenin as a “dangerous escalation” and in a statement said the desecration of the mosque by some Israeli troops fanned religious tension. Israel’s army said it would discipline the soldiers. Palestinians see the West Bank as central to a future independent state. Allies of Israel backing its war against Hamas terrorists in Israeli-occupied Gaza have urged restraint, including punishing Israeli settlers in the West Bank accused of armed attacks on Palestinians.

  • Britain has announced travel bans on Israeli settlers responsible for attacks on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. Taking to X, Foreign Secretary David Cameron said that extremist settlers are “undermining security and stability for both Israelis and Palestinians. Israel must take stronger action to stop settler violence and hold the perpetrators accountable.”
