NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha on Friday witnessed a heated debate over the Ethics Committee‘s cash for query report with the opposition members requesting Speaker Om Birla to allow Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra to speak against the allegations levelled against her.
The motion for discussion was moved by Union minister Pralhad Joshi even as the opposition questioned the haste in conducting the debate and said heavens would not have fallen had the government given 3-4 days to take cognisance of the report.
Initiating the debate, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said at least 3-4 days should be given to study LS Ethics Committee’s 495-page report on Mahua Moitra issue. The Congress leader requested that debate in Lok Sabha be deferred till then.
Adhir Chowdhury also said the TMC MP should be given opportunity to express her views on LS Ethics Committee report. Another Congress leader Manish Tewari said that the Ethics panel did not have powers to recommend the expulsion of any member. He also opposed the whip issued by the parties.
The Trinamool Congress insisted that Mahua Moitra should be given an opportunity to put forth her views. “Allegations have been levelled against her so she should be given an opportunity to speak,” TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee said.
The opposition members questioned why Darshan Hiranandani was not called as a witness by the committee and why only his affidavit was relied upon by.
