Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma calls for empowerment of Muslims through caste census
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday questioned the Congress and Opposition alliance’s focus on the caste census
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday questioned the Congress and Opposition alliance’s focus on the caste census of Hindus, proposing that a similar census should be conducted for the Muslim community.
While speaking at Agenda Aaj Tak, Sarma emphasised the importance of conducting a caste census amongst Muslims for their empowerment. He said that while the opposition tends to point fingers at Hindus during caste discussions, the country truly requires a comprehensive census of Muslims.
The Chief Minister said, “Hindus are our brothers, but Muslims are elder brothers. It is crucial for them to be strong.”
Criticising the opposition, Sarma affirmed that “Hindus have now awakened, pledging not to be divided”.
Sarma emphasised unity, stating, “We are one, we have two brothers – Hindu and Muslim.”
Taking a dig at Rahul Gandhi, Sarma remarked that the Congress leader’s strategy backfired in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. He questioned the timing of discussions about the OBC census, suggesting that these issues surface only during elections.
He highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s longstanding advocacy for justice for Pasmanda Muslims and stressed the necessity of a caste census within Muslim community.
At the event, Sarma also mentioned the upcoming legislative action against polygamy, scheduled to be passed on February 4, 2024.
