La Liga: After Rodrygo, Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois unlikely for El Clasico with injury

Despite Real Madrid’s stunning 5-2 comeback victory over Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League on October 23, the team now faces the possibility of missing two key players—Thibaut Courtois and Rodrygo Goes—for their upcoming El Clásico clash against FC Barcelona. Rodrygo had to be substituted in the 60th minute due to a muscle strain in his right leg, and Real Madrid has since released a statement indicating that goalkeeper Courtois has also sustained an injury, picking up a niggle in the adductor muscle of his left leg.

Real Madrid’s impressive performance against Dortmund might have long-term consequences, especially in La Liga, where they are set to face their arch-rivals Barcelona on October 27. Courtois, who missed most of last season due to an ACL injury, is set to undergo further tests to determine the severity of his latest issue. Should Courtois be ruled out, Andriy Lunin is expected to step in as his replacement, a role he filled admirably last season across all competitions.

“Following tests carried out on our player Thibaut Courtois by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with an injury to the adductor muscle of his left leg. Pending development,” Real Madrid said in a statement.

Lunin’s return to action would not be surprising, given his solid performances in Courtois’ absence. Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti is likely to show full confidence in the young Ukrainian goalkeeper if required.

The El Clasico promises to be a high-stakes encounter between two of Spain’s top clubs, with Barcelona currently leading La Liga. A victory for Real Madrid would bring them level on points with their Catalan rivals, though they would remain second due to goal difference. However, Real Madrid’s unbeaten run this season is something they will fiercely protect. Facing Barcelona’s formidable attack, the potential absence of Courtois could be a significant blow to Los Blancos, especially considering his experience in high-pressure matches.
